Social Media in the Art World

I was invited by the art tech startup Artsy to host a social media workshop for art galleries in Berlin. My session covered social media in the art world and how social media marketing can help galleries build relationships with art collectors, impact consumer behaviour and increase brand awareness. Below are some of my best practices and tips shared during the workshop.

TELL NOT SELL
Relevance is a huge contributor to social media engagement and telling stories that are relevant for your audience need be a main priority for art galleries and brands.  With the art world having so many stories and perspectives to share on everything from creative processes, ideas, inspiration to history and society there’s a lot of potential creating engaging content for galleries and build active communities.

PEOPLE FIRST
We use social media as a way to identify and express ourselves, and we tend to follow the brands and profiles that share our interests, values or passions, or highlight persons we want to connect with.  For brands and digital marketers that means addressing inclusion and diversity in a greater extent, and including people of all backgrounds and perspectives in social media marketing and digital content. 

GET SOCIAL
Think of your content as conversation starters to get people to share their own stories, interact with you and other users to help them understand the real value of being social with your brand. Being social can ultimately create business growth for art galleries, as the simple process of just reaching out and interacting with potential art collectors and buyers can help increase sales and awareness.

In preparation for the workshop I read Hiscox Online Art Trade Report 2018  which included several fascinating stats and insights that highlight key reasons why social media can’t be ignored by art galleriers and museums. Definitely recommend it!
